Blu-ray Release: The Karate Kid 1 & 2

May 11, 2010

Today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing the first two Karate Kid movies on Blu-Ray, in honour of the remake, starring Jaden Simth and Jackie Chan, coming on June 11th.

Released in 1984 and ‘86, respectively, these are quintessential classics from the decade that knew teen flicks so well.  Directed by John G. Avilsden (Rocky), The Karate Kid is the story of teenager Daniel (Ralph Macchio), who, after run-ins with school bullies, is taught the fine art of martial arts by the wise and peaceful Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita in an Oscar-nominated role).

I have fond memories of watching these films on TV, as they always had such a coolness about them in the way they put forth the message of standing up for yourself.  Now is the perfect time to add them to your collection, on Blu-Ray for the first time.  Although it may be pointless to remake such a classic, I’m still looking forward to the reboot opening on June 11th.  Hopefully it will inspire these classics to reach a new generation of kids.

The Karate Kid 1 & 2 come packaged together in a nice box, but are also available to buy separately.  Special features include commentary and a bunch of featurettes for the first film, but just a featurette for the second.  Both films include Blu-pop: pop up trivia that you can activate to appear during the film.
