Blu-ray Release: 45th Anniversary Ed. of Doctor Zhivago

May 25, 2010

Back on May 4th, Warner Home Video released a 45th anniversary edition of the classic film Doctor Zhivago on Blu-Ray.  The discs come in a nice book type packaging, much like some of WHV’s other Blu-Ray re-releases, and contains 44 pages of production history, bios, and trivia.

Disc one includes:

• The film, with optional commentary

• An all-new two-part retrospective

Disc two contains:

• An hour-long documentary Doctor Zhivago: The Making of a Russian Epic

• A gallery of vintage featurettes, including press interviews and a Geraldine Chaplin screen test

• Theatrical trailer

The Blu-Ray also comes with a bonus third disc, which is an 8-song CD soundtrack sampler.

Doctor Zhivago won 5 Oscars for Art Direction/Set Direction-Colour, Cinematography-Colour, Costume Design-Colour, Original Musical Score, and Adapted Screenplay.  It was nominated as well for Supporting Actor, Director, Film Editing, Sound, and Best Picture.

Just another quick note is that it was Sound of Music that won Best Picture in 1965.  Interestingly it’s other noms were most of Zhivago’s wins, and wins were Zhivago’s noms as the two films traded pretty evenly that year with 10 noms, 5 wins each…

Doctor Zhivago is 200 minutes and is rated PG.
