Blu-ray Release: Das Boot

July 5, 2011

Today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing director Wolfgang Peterson’s 1981 epic, Das Boot on Blu-ray.  Taking place in the midst of WWII, the film follows a young German submarine crew ordered to patrol the Atlantic and take down an allied armada bringing supplies to Britain.  Nominated for six Academy Awards, this is the first time that the universally critically acclaimed film is available in HD.

Including the original theatrical version as well as the directors cut, this 2-disc 30th anniversary edition Blu-ray comes highly recommended for both avid fans and those new to the film.  Known for its length and famous for the way that it quietly builds with often unbearable tension towards an explosive climax, Das Boot continues to thrill audiences with a movie experience quite unlike any other.

The Blu-ray includes an exclusive new documentary on Peterson, audio commentary with the director as well as several ‘behind the scenes’ featurettes.

Das Boot is 149 minutes and rated 14A.  The director’s cut is 208 minutes.
