DVD/Blu-ray Release: The Lion King & African Cats

October 4, 2011

The Lion King:  After an incredibly succesful release in 3D theatres over the past few weeks, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is releasing The Lion King for the first time on Blu-ray today.  Originally released in 1994, this is a beloved animated masterpiece that ranks among the best of Disney’s modern films. We reviewed the 3D release on September 16th, all recognizing its status as a classic.  Our overall consensus was:

“Given a limited 3D release in theatres for the next two weeks, Disney’s 1994 film The Lion King is an enduring animated classic with appealing characters, beautiful animation and equally memorable songs that deserves to be seen on the big screen.  ***1/2 (Out of 4)”

The Blu-ray includes several deleted or extended scenes, a deleted song and a new blooper reel as well as several ‘behind the scenes’ featurettes.  Also included is a standard DVD.  The film is also available to buy on 3D Blu-ray.

The Lion King is 89 minutes and rated G.

African Cats:  Also new on Blu-ray & DVD today is African Cats.  The beautiful nature documentary from Disney•Nature follows a pride of lions and a family of cheetahs on the African savanna, and almost plays as a true life companion piece to The Lion King.  We reviewed the film when it opened in theatres on April 22nd, all admiring the striking cinematography.  Our overall consensus was:

“With strikingly beautiful cinematography and a strong story-driven narration by Samuel L. Jackson, Disney•Nature’s African Cats is an excellent nature documentary for older kids and adults.  ***1/2 (Out of 4)”

The Blu-ray includes interactive features with the filmmakers and nature conservationists, as well as a music video with Jordan Sparks titled The World I Knew.  Also included is a standard DVD of the film.

African Cats is 89 minutes and rated G.
