Blu-ray Release: Love Story

February 7, 2012

Today, Paramount Home Entertainment is releasing the 1970 melodrama Love Story for the first time on Blu-ray.  Nominated for seven Academy Awards and becoming one of the biggest box office phenomenons of the ‘70’s, the romantic drama follows Oliver Barrett IV (Ryan O’Neal), a rich university student who falls helplessly in love with Jennifer Cavilleri (Ali MacGraw) before tragedy tears them apart.  With fine direction from Arthur Hiller, Love Story is a flawed but arguably important classic.

Although groundbreaking in the way it shook things up and changed the way Hollywood depicted young romance, the corny dialogue and inadvertently hilarious montages haven’t aged well.  Many will still see why Ryan O’Neal was so appealing to the numerous young women who originally saw the film, but Ali MacGraw’s performance is one of the most stilted to ever receive a Best Actress nomination.  But if you can look past these problems, Love Story still plays okay as a straight forward tearjerker and fans should add the Blu-ray to their collection.

The Blu-ray includes commentary with director Arthur Hiller and a featurette looking at the classic status the film has achieved over the years.

Love Story is 100 minutes and rated 14A.
