Carol (Lake Bell) is a vocal coach who has always dreamed of doing voiceover narration for movie trailers.  But she keeps hitting the glass ceiling, facing sexism from her rival Gustav Warner (Ken Marino) and a lack of support from her arrogant father (Fred Melamed).  When a new gig opens up, Carol finds herself battling both men for the job, with help from her sweet colleague Louis (Demetri Martin).

Named for those famous three words originally spoken by the late voiceover artist Don LaFontaine, Lake Bell easily proves herself as a triple threat with In a World…, directing the film from her own witty and very funny screenplay.  Touching on issues of sexism and cutthroat competition within the industry, while still keeping a light and entertaining tone throughout, this is a delightful comedy that has a heart and something to say.

The DVD includes commentary with Lake Bell, an alternate opening, deleted scenes and a gag reel.

Named after the famous ‘In a World…’ opening to movie trailers of the past, In a World… is about Carol (Lake Bell) a woman aspiring to be a voiceover artist in what she finds to be a male-centric industry.  Her father (Fred Melamed) is a king of the voiceover world, with the deep and smooth voice that is usually heard over movie trailers.  But Carol wants to prove her worth in the industry too, and after landing a coveted trailer role, the world starts to open up for her, with gigs that were previously falling into the guys laps, falling into hers.

When she finds herself in direct competition with her father and his protege (Ken Marino) for a huge voiceover role that will bring back the famous line ‘In a World’ to trailers, she has to deal with jealousy and the preconceptions of her place in the industry.

The film is funny, well acted, and provides a satirical commentary on an industry that is still male-centric.  It’s worth checking out now that it’s on DVD, especially if you have some familiarity with the world of voiceover.

Why is it that movie trailers always have male narrators?  This is exactly what Carol Soloman (Lake Bell) wonders in this movie.  She is a vocal coach who wants to get into voice acting, just like her father (Fred Melamed).  But her dad, who has the classic trailer narration voice, wishes to pass the torch onto Gustav (Ken Marino), an egotistical hotshot.  However, Carol persists, despite the growing rivalry between her and her own father.

In a World… is quite funny.  As somebody who knows someone in the voice acting industry, I have an idea of how seriously this job is taken.  Lake Bell has created a clever, witty and very accurate movie about voice acting.  This is an intelligent movie, with an ultimate message about family and forgiveness.

In a World… is a charming and witty comedic take on the male-dominated voiceover industry and the power of family to shape your dreams.  Carol Soloman (Lake Bell) is a vocal coach.  Her dream is to break into the world of movie trailer voiceovers, like her father Sam (Fred Melamed).  Not a chance, says dad.  He knows the business since he’s up for his lifetime achievement award and, according to him, the world prefers male voices when it comes to trailers.

All bets are off when an open casting call is held for “The Amazon Games” trailer, a female-centric quadrilogy.  Carol finds herself competing against the best in the industry, including egotistical Gustav Werner (Ken Marino) and her dear old dad.  With the support of her sister Dani (Micheala Watkins) and Dani’s partner Moe (Rob Corddry), and the help of her friend and coworker audio engineer Louis (Demetri Martin), Carol manages to pull together the audition she needs.

Lake Bell is a one-woman powerhouse with this film.  As writer, director and lead actor, Bell delivers a laugh out loud funny movie filled with smart dialogue, aided by a solid cast.  In a World… will leave you listening to the voices in the media and all around you with different ear.  Who knew the voiceover world could be so darn funny.

In a World… DVD Review By Tony

In a World… was the opening to many of the thousands of movie trailers narrated by the late Don LaFontaine for over forty years. Carol (Lake Bell) is a voice coach and daughter of Sam (Fred Melamed). Though widely seen as the successor to LaFontaine, Sam is considering retiring, leaving the way open for Gustav (Ken Marino) to  go after the first trailer since LaFontaine’s death to begin with the famous phrase. No one expected Carol to go after the same gig, since trailer narration, like old time radio, was assumed to be reserved for deep male voices.

Carol’s life is complicated by various characters, including a sister Dani (Michaela Watkins) and her spouse Moe (Rob Corddry), her father’s latest young mistress Jamie (Alexandra Holden), a colleague Louis (Demetri Martin) that she likes, and Gustav himself. Everything comes together in the end, when the new trailer’s voice is revealed at an awards ceremony.

Lake Bell has written and directed a very witty comedy poking affectionate fun at the people who make a living with their voices. In addition to those mentioned, the cast features many fine actors in small roles, including Eva Longoria, Tig Notaro, Nick Offerman, Jason O’Mara, Jeff Garlin, and Geena Davis. Tight editing keeps the various story lines moving along at a good pace, all supported by a good score from Ryan Miller.

Consensus: An entertaining and very funny comedy about a woman following her dreams in the male-dominated world of voiceover artists, In a World… boasts sharp writing and directing from multitalented lead actress Lake Bell.  *** (Out of 4)
