Blu-ray Release: The Deep End

June 3, 2014

The Deep End Blu-ray

Last month on May 6th, Fox Searchlight released their 2001 thriller The Deep End on Blu-ray, in honour of the studio’s 20th anniversary.  Margaret Hall (Tilda Swinton) is a small town housewife who finds herself dragged into a dangerous web after telling the shady Darby (Josh Lucas) to stay away from her teenaged son, Beau (Jonathan Tucker).  But when Darby winds up dead, she finds herself blackmailed by the mysterious Aleck Spera (Goran Visnjic).

With the studio also rereleasing some of their most beloved films, it’s interesting that Fox Searchlight chose to include The Deep End as part of their anniversary celebrations.  But the film received acclaim at Sundance some thirteen years ago, and even garnered Tilda Swinton her first Golden Globe nomination.  Although some of the twists strain credibility and the story is often slow burning, The Deep End features some stylish cinematography and Tilda Swinton anchors the film with a solid performance.

The Blu-ray also includes commentary with directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel as well as two featurettes and the original trailer and TV spot.

The Deep End is 101 minutes and rated 14A.
