Blu-ray Release: 101 Dalmatians

February 10, 2015

By John Corrado

101 Dalmatians Blu-rayDisney is releasing their delightful 1961 animated classic 101 Dalmatians for the first time on Blu-ray today as part of the Diamond Edition series, and it’s a must have for fans of the film.  When their puppies are dognapped by “devil woman” Cruella De Vil (Betty Lou Gerson), dalmatians Pongo (Rod Taylor) and Perdita (Cate Bauer) have to rescue them before they become part of an elaborate fur coat.

With the groundbreaking use of photocopying techniques that cut costs and the amount of animators required, this was a much needed financial success for Disney that became the highest grossing film of 1961, after the commercial failure of Sleeping Beauty in 1959 threatened to shut down their animation department.

With such a storied production behind it, I’m happy to report that this childhood favourite still holds up quite well after all these years, and looks better than ever on Blu-ray.  For those of all ages, 101 Dalmatians offers the perfect mix of humour, adventure and memorable characters, with the wicked Cruella De Vil remaining among Disney’s finest villains.

The Blu-ray includes the amusing new animated short The Further Adventures of Thunderbolt, as well as several featurettes, and a complete episode from The Wonderful World of Disney titled The Best Doggoned Dog in the World.  The bonus features from the original DVD release are also included.

101 Dalmatians is 79 minutes and rated G.
