Blu-ray Release: Predestination

Predestination Blu-raySony Pictures is releasing Predestination on Blu-ray today, a hidden gem from last year’s festival circuit, that demands and deserves your attention.  The film follows a Temporal Agent (Ethan Hawke) who has the ability to travel through time, and is on his final mission to stop a devastating bombing before it occurs.

Revealing any more of the plot would ruin the truly gripping experience of watching Predestination unfold, a science fiction film that feels blindingly original and completely unique.  Early on, a character promises the best story you are ever going to hear, and Australian directors Peter and Michael Spierig deliver on this claim every step of the way.

This is an ingeniously written and deeply philosophical mind bender, that took my breath away.  The screenplay crackles with sharp dialogue and uses inventive storytelling techniques, weaving together themes of identity and free will in thought provoking and surprisingly moving ways.

Every element of the film is superbly crafted, from the captivating cinematography to the seamless editing, and the carefully unfolding plot holds us in tight suspense, right up to the final reveal which brings added resonance to this time travel story.  Carried brilliantly by a pair of knockout performances from Ethan Hawke and newcomer Sarah Snook, Predestination is an exhilaratingly original film that I couldn’t recommend more highly.

The Blu-ray includes bloopers, a short featurette with the cast and crew, and a thorough 76 minute documentary titled All You Zombies: Bringing Predestination to Life, that takes us through every step of the production from the original short story to the final film.

Predestination is 98 minutes and rated 14A.
