Mr. Turner Blu-rayToday, Sony Pictures Classics is releasing Mr. Turner on Blu-ray.  Directed by Mike Leigh, the biopic documents the life and affairs of the gruff and anti-social landscape painter Joseph Mallard William Turner (Timothy Spall).

Although a bit dry and overlong, and often moving at a slow pace, this is an artistic achievement that has received critical acclaim for understandable reasons.  Receiving four Oscar nominations, including Best Cinematography, and winning Timothy Spall the Best Actor award at Cannes for his excellent and understated portrayal of the grunting title subject, Mr. Turner is a fine period piece, with a painterly quality to many of the beautifully rendered scenes.

The Blu-ray includes commentary with Mike Leigh, as well as featurettes on the film’s excellent cinematography and memorable uses of colour.

Mr. Turner is 150 minutes and rated PG.
