Still Alice Blu-rayToday, Sony Pictures Classics is releasing Still Alice on Blu-ray.  Alice Howland (Julianne Moore) is a highly intelligent linguistics professor and mother of three, who finds her life turned upside down when she is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, putting a strain on her relationship with husband John (Alec Baldwin) and their freethinking daughter Lydia (Kristen Stewart).

Winning Julianne Moore the Best Actress Oscar, Still Alice is a solid example of an excellent performance being better than the actual movie.  Based on the bestselling novel by Lisa Genova, the film itself is merely good, if sometimes veering a little too far into melodrama.

But Still Alice comes recommended for Julianne Moore’s quiet powerhouse of a performance, an understandable if predictable choice for the Academy to award.  The actress delivers a nuanced and believable portrayal of her character’s dissent into incurable illness, hauntingly displaying her struggle to respond gracefully even as she loses her dignity, bringing genuine emotional weight to this heart wrenching story.

The Blu-ray includes three deleted scenes, two featurettes, and an interview with composer Ilan Eshkeri.

Still Alice is 101 minutes and rated PG.
