Edward Scissorhands Blu-rayToday, 20th Century Fox is releasing a 25th anniversary edition of director Tim Burton’s beloved classic Edward Scissorhands on Blu-ray.  Pieced together atop a mountain by a lonely old inventor (Vincent Price), who dies before being able to complete him, Edward (Johnny Depp) is a gentle man who is left with scissors for hands.

When he’s welcomed into the community below by a kind Avon Lady (Dianne Wiest), and becomes friends with her daughter Kim (Winona Ryder), Edward becomes a local sensation through his unique hair cuts and shaped hedge trimmings, before the townspeople come to fear him.

The first of many fruitful collaborations between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, Edward Scissorhands remains one of their finest achievements, either together or on their own.  Brought to life through captivating costumes, practical effects and brilliant production design, everything about the film remains just as vivid since it was first released in 1990, affectively mixing sharp satire of 1950s cookie cutter suburbia, with a touching and surprisingly human story.

Caroline Thompson’s beautifully written screenplay is richly populated with unique characters, which are perfectly complimented by Tim Burton’s visionary stylistic choices, Danny Elfman’s brilliant music and Johnny Depp’s nuanced performance, which all draw us further into this enchanting world.  With a perfectly handled sense of magical realism, and a heartfelt message about accepting even the most unusual differences, Edward Scissorhands is a haunting and dreamlike fairy tale that still resonates just as deeply, delivering an unforgettable mix of both darkly funny and powerfully moving scenes.

The Blu-ray also includes separate commentary tracks with Tim Burton and Danny Elfman, a brief promotional featurette on the production, and two original trailers.

Edward Scissorhands is 105 minutes and rated PG.
