DVD Release: Community: The Complete Final Season

March 8, 2016

Community The Complete Sixth Season DVDSony is releasing Community: The Complete Final Season on DVD today, including all thirteen episodes from the excellent sixth season of the cult classic show that started in 2009.  All in all, this is a remarkably consistent collection of episodes, and easily the best since the first three seasons.

Released on Yahoo! after the network cancelled the show, the episodes here are allowed to run a little longer, and these few extra minutes make a positive difference in terms of individual story and character arcs.  With several actors not returning, this season also does a great job bringing two new characters into the study group, Frankie Dart (Paget Brewster) and Elroy Patashnik (Keith David), both memorable additions.

The thirteen episodes here are all incredibly enjoyable, with some of the many highlights including the epic underground paintball battle in Modern Espionage, an elaborate homage to The Sting on Grifting 101, and the darkly funny Wedding Videography, which is done in the form of a documentary being directed by Abed (Danny Pudi).  Episodes like the Bobcat Goldthwait-directed Basic Crisis Room Decorum and the brilliantly subversive Queer Studies & Advanced Waxing offer prime examples of the sharp writing and character-driven comedy the show has always done so well.

Creator Dan Harmon, his crack team of writers, and the entire ensemble cast really give it their all this time around, offering another big dose of the meta humour, clever references and beating heart that made the show so great in the first place, as well as a poignant sendoff for these beloved characters.  It’s hard not to get emotional during the final episode, Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television, which touchingly deals with themes of moving on and letting go, nicely staged around highly self-referential conversations about what they could possibly do for a seventh season.

It’s been great hanging out with Jeff (Joel McHale), Annie (Allison Brie), Britta (Gillian Jacobs) and the rest of this ragtag but tight knit group over the years.  I’m even going to miss the craziness of Ben Chang (Ken Jeong) and Dean Pelton (Jim Rash).  But it’s worth celebrating the fact that a series as weird and wonderful as Community even lasted this long, thanks in large part to the passionate fan base it has attracted.  This sixth season exceeds all expectations, and belongs in any fan’s collection, offering the best swan song we could have hoped for to this brilliant series.  Now bring on the movie.

The two-disc set also has a nicely done farewell featurette, as well as a gag reel and deleted scenes.

Community: The Complete Final Season is approximately 360 minutes and rated PG.
