Review: How to Plan An Orgy in a Small Town

★★★ (out of 4)

How to Plan An Orgy in a Small Town PosterWhen Cassie Cranston (Jewel Staite) returns to the prudish small town of Beaver’s Ridge for her mother’s funeral, years after an embarrassing incident as a teenager had her labelled the “town slut” and led to a career as a sex columnist, the eccentric locals convince her to plan an orgy.

The townsfolk all have ulterior motives for the sex party, including young lawyer and Cassie’s former boyfriend Adam (Ennis Esmer), whose high-strung wife Heather (Lauren Lee Smith) is trying to get pregnant.

Among others, there’s also the nebbishy record shop owner Chester (Jonas Chernick) who harbours feelings for his hip young assistant Polly (Tommie-Amber Pirie), as well as nerdy gamer Seth (Kristian Bruun) who still lives with his mom (Rosemary Dunsmore).

Written and directed by Jeremy LaLonde, the appeal of How to Plan An Orgy in a Small Town goes beyond the fun to say title.  Although some of the humour is a little sitcomish, this is a fun and often entertaining Canadian comedy, that carries with it a sex-positive attitude and has its heart in the right place.  The film is especially worth seeing for some delightful performances from the ensemble cast, including notable standouts Ennis Esmer, Jonas Chernick and Tommie-Amber Pirie.

How to Plan An Orgy in a Small Town is now playing at Cineplex Yonge-Dundas in Toronto.
