Blu-ray Release: Anomalisa

June 7, 2016

By John Corrado

Anomalisa Blu-rayA unique and critically acclaimed animated film from co-directors Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson, Anomalisa follows Michael (David Thewlis), a depressed and lonely customer service expert who has a chance encounter with Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a shy woman who is seemingly not like everyone else, at a hotel in Cincinnatti.

Watching Anomalisa again, I was really able to marvel at the technical mastery behind the stop motion animation, and also focus on the little moments and details that bring deeper meaning to this deceptively simple story.  The film draws us in with a sense of malaise, becoming a haunting and moving experience that will leave you thinking about it for days afterwards.  My full review is right here.

The Blu-ray also has three “behind the scenes” featurettes, including an extended look at the production and deeper themes of the story, as well as specific looks at the sound design and the unique challenges they faced over the many months it took to craft that now famous sex scene.  These bonus features really give us a sense of the immense work that went into the film and are highly recommended viewing afterwards.

Anomalisa is a Paramount Home Media Distribution release.  It’s 90 minutes and rated 14A.
