Blu-ray Release: Zootopia
By John Corrado
My favourite movie of the year so far, Zootopia takes place in a seemingly utopic mammal metropolis where animals start mysteriously going missing, forcing newly recruited bunny police officer Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) to work with the smooth con artist fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) to solve the case, uncovering deep rooted fear between prey and predators.
Back in March, I called Zootopia “a work of staggering genius,” and I stand by that. The film has since become a billion dollar hit and gained a dedicated online fan base, and with good reason. This is an entertaining and even genuinely thrilling animated adventure, that also has a surprising and deeply moving undercurrent of timely social themes, ranking among Disney’s best. You can read our three views of the film right here.
The Blu-ray comes packed with a fair bit of bonus material, including a bunch of deleted scenes and a brief look at some of the characters that didn’t make the final cut, as well as multiple featurettes that take us through everything from how the animators created the characters based on research of real animals, to the world music vibe that Michael Giacchino brought to the score. It’s also fascinating to see how the story evolved from having Nick as the main character in a world where predators wore shock collars, before the film finally came together when Judy shifted to being the main protagonist. This is a solid supplemental package that provides the cherry on top of what is already a must own film.
Zootopia is a Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment release. It’s 108 minutes and rated PG.
