DVD Review: Key and Peele: The Complete Series

August 3, 2016

By John Corrado

Key and Peele DVDRunning for five seasons on Comedy Central from 2012 to 2015, Key and Peele showcases the combined efforts of comedic duo Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, with each episode mixing footage from their standup routine in front of a live audience and filmed sketches that star them in a variety of different roles.

Their boundary pushing and often racially centric humour tackles stereotypes head-on, including some pretty fearless sketches like one where they are in “whiteface” to evade a Nazi soldier, and the very funny Duelling Magical Negroes.  Some of my other favourite sketches include the one tackling perceived homophobia at the office, and the Gremlins 2 brainstorming session, which is one of the most inspired things they’ve done.

There is a playfulness to the way they utilize wigs, makeup and fake accents to transform into multiple different characters, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, developing recurring players like President Obama’s Anger Translator and substitute teacher Mr. Garvy.  Featuring all 55 episodes of the show, Key and Peele: The Complete Series is a worthwhile set for fans of their edgy and often very funny brand of humour, and it’s a lot of fun to watch through the episodes and revisit some of these now classic sketches.

Bonus features on the ten-disc set include outtakes, The Super Episode: Best of Seasons 1 & 2, as well as The Van and Mike Show, a YouTube series where they play characters analyzing the series.

Key and Peele: The Complete Series is a Paramount Home Media Distribution release.  It’s rated 14A.
