Blu-ray Review: Megan Leavey

September 19, 2017

By John Corrado

Megan Leavey (Kate Mara) is a young soldier who joins the armed forces as a way out of her dead-end life.  She is put to work in the K9 unit, and sent to Iraq with a troubled dog named Rex whom she is able to bond with.  When Rex ends up saving her life, Megan fights for the right to adopt him, despite the usual policy of dogs being seen as the property of the armed forces.

Carried by an excellent performance from Kate Mara, and backed up by a solid supporting cast, Megan Leavey is a tearjerker that also manages to be inspiring, capturing the unbreakable bond between a soldier and her dog with genuine emotion and moving authenticity.  I really liked this one, and if you missed the film in theatres, it’s worth seeking out now.  You can read my full review right here.

The Blu-ray also includes the short featurette The Story of Megan Leavey, which has the cast briefly discussing their roles and also features the real woman who inspired the story.

Megan Leavey is an Elevation Pictures release.  It’s 120 minutes and rated PG.
