DVD Review: Letterkenny: Season 1

November 28, 2017

By John Corrado

Every episode of the Canadian comedy series Letterkenny opens with a title card telling us that the fictitious Ontario town that gives the show its title has a scant population of five thousand residents, and “these are their problems.”

The show follows Wayne (Jared Keeso), his younger sister Katy (Michele Mylett), and his friends Daryl (Nathan Dales) and Squirrely Dan (K. Trevor Wilson), who spend most of their days hanging out around the produce stand on his family’s farm.

They get into fights, spend many a night at the local bar, and have run-ins with a cast of supporting characters, including hockey players Reilly (Dylan Playfair) and Jonesy (Andrew Herr), a gang of meth heads led by the emo Stewart (Tyler Johnston), and the pervy Pastor Glen (Jacob Tierney).

Created by Jared Keeso and Jacob Tierney, Letterkenny is an incredibly amusing show, that hits the sweet spot between being satire and homage to life in small town Ontario.  Produced by Crave TV, it became the most watched show in the streaming service’s history after premiering in 2016, and went on to win Best Comedy Series at the Canadian Screen Awards earlier this year.  There are two more seasons of the show already on Crave TV, and it just got renewed for a fourth one, and it’s easy to see why it has picked up such a homegrown fan base.

Made up of just six episodes, I binge watched the entire first season of Letterkenny the other night, and had a total blast.  Shot in Sudbury, the series is bolstered by a droll sense of humour, and is brought to life thanks to spot-on performances from its cast.  The script is filled with witty dialogue that makes hilarious use of Canuck slang, and there are a lot of great running gags and catchphrases that are fun to watch for throughout the episodes.  The main characters are oddly endearing in their own ways, and it’s a lot of fun to hang out with them in the town of Letterkenny for a couple of hours.

The DVD includes the six episodes Ain’t No Reason to Get Excited, Super Soft Birthday, Fartbook, Wingman Wayne, Rave and A Fuss in the Back Bush.  There are no bonus features.

Letterkenny: Season 1 is an Elevation Pictures release.  It’s 146 minutes and rated 18A.
