VOD Release: The Sandwich Nazi

November 28, 2017

By John Corrado

Here’s a release that has been a long time coming.  After premiering at Hot Docs in 2015, and then getting held back for two years due to some behind the scenes disagreements, The Sandwich Nazi is finally being released on a variety of VOD platforms today, including Vimeo on Demand, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Microsoft and Google Play.

Directed by Lewis Bennett, the film follows Salam Kahil, a Lebanese immigrant and former male escort who runs a deli in East Vancouver, that has a sign on its door warning about coarse language and nudity.  Salam is a potty mouth who treats his customers to crude jokes and stories of his wild sexual escapades, but he also has a good heart, frequently handing out sandwiches free of charge to the homeless.

Following its initial festival run, the subject changed his mind on the film, asserting that he didn’t want anyone profiting off of it because “his life isn’t for sale,” hence why it’s only getting a wider release now.  My own journey with the film is almost equally long, having first reviewed it during Hot Docs in 2015 (here), and writing about it again when it opened for a limited run at the Carlton this past spring (here).

So I’ve already gone on record a couple of times to recommend The Sandwich Nazi, and after watching it again recently, I still think the film is worth seeing.  This is an entertaining documentary that also serves as an engaging and sometimes unexpectedly emotional character study, and the film finds its dramatic weight when exploring interesting themes about overcoming the trauma of experiencing childhood sexual abuse.  Now that it’s finally available on demand, it’s worth checking out for yourself.

As a gift for our readers, the director and producer were also kind enough to give us a special discount to offer anyone who is interested in renting or purchasing the film on Vimeo.  Simply enter the promo code “onemovie” or follow this link to get 25% off at checkout, valid until December 31st, 2017.
