DVD Review: Ben is Back

March 25, 2019

By John Corrado

A father-son collaboration between director Peter Hedges and his son Lucas Hedges, who stars in the title role as a young drug addict, Ben is Back is one of the films from last year’s awards season that I wish had gotten more attention. So now that it’s available on DVD, I would encourage you to check it out.

Julia Roberts delivers a fierce and moving performance as the young addict’s mother, who tries desperately to help her son stay clean over the course of a tumultuous Christmas Eve when he unexpectedly returns home from rehab for the holidays, and Lucas Hedges carries the film with another in a long line of impressive performances from the young actor.

Yes, the film got a bit overshadowed by Beautiful Boy, another very good addiction drama that also premiered at TIFF last year and starred the other hot young star Timothée Chalamet, but it’s still surprising that Roberts and Hedges didn’t factor more into the awards conversation. They are both excellent in Ben is Back, bringing out the best in each other and delivering some of the finest work of their respective careers. For more on the film itself, you can read my full review right here.

The DVD also includes a commentary track with Peter Hedges, as well as a photo gallery.

Ben is Back is an Elevation Pictures release. It’s 103 minutes and rated 14A.
