4K Ultra HD Review: Cold Pursuit

May 20, 2019

By John Corrado

Liam Neeson’s action movies, in which the actor usually plays a father getting revenge, have practically become their own cliché at this point, but sometimes one comes along that surprises you. Such is the case with Cold Pursuit, which was one of the nicest surprises of the winter movie season when it was released in theatres this past February, and is now available on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD.

Directed by Hans Peter Moland, remaking his own 2014 Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance, Cold Pursuit is actually a pitch black comedy about the futility of violence, in which Neeson stars as a snowplow driver who ignites a gang war in a Colorado ski town while avenging the murder of his son (Micheál Richardson).

This is not only a very entertaining addition to the long line of “Liam Neeson gets revenge” films that have come to define his career over the past decade, but it also functions as a clever and often darkly funny commentary on the subgenre, rich with grand themes about fathers and sons and the never-ending cycles of violence that are born out of every act of vengeance. For more on the film itself, you can read my full review right here.

I was sent the 4K Ultra HD set for review, which also comes with a regular Blu-ray disc that houses a selection of bonus materials. First up is the featurette Welcome to Kehoe: Behind the Scenes of Cold Pursuit, a surprisingly in-depth piece featuring cast and crew interviews, that explores different aspects of the production as well as the story’s themes. This is followed by interviews with Moland and Neeson, as well as five deleted scenes (Nels and Kyle Talk, Kim Hit On By Drunk Ski Dude, Grace Flushes Her Drugs, Gip Interacts With Teen Outside Store, and Sly and Bone Distribute Drugs).

Cold Pursuit is an Elevation Pictures release. It’s 119 minutes and rated 14A.
