Blu-ray Review: Arctic
By John Corrado
Starring Mads Mikkelsen in a compelling, mostly wordless performance as a man who is left stranded in the middle of the Arctic following a plane crash, and finds himself caring for an injured woman (Maria Thelma Smáradóttir), Arctic is a survival movie in the most stripped down and literal sense of the term. It’s now available on Blu-ray.
Directed by Joe Penna, who brings an observational style to the material, and featuring sweeping cinematography by Tómas Örn Tómasson, this is a sparsely scripted but gripping film that is built around a truly excellent performance from Mikkelsen. It’s worth seeing on Blu-ray, and for more on the film itself, you can read my full review right here.
The Blu-ray also includes several short bonus features. First up we get a short piece entitled Mads Mikkelsen Featurette, which touches on the actor’s involvement in the film; and next is The Story Behind Arctic, which briefly talks about how co-writer and director Joe Penna went from being a YouTube content creator to making his first feature film. These are followed by a selection of five deleted scenes (Fishing Lures, Mayday, False Alarm, Forgotten, and Stay Warm).
Arctic is an Elevation Pictures release. It’s 98 minutes and rated PG.
