Blu-ray Review: Missing Link

July 23, 2019

By John Corrado

One of my favourite movies of the year so far, Laika’s latest beautifully animated stop motion adventure Missing Link is being released on Blu-ray this week. The film follows a 19th century explorer, Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman), who befriends an eight foot tall Sasquatch (Zach Galifianakis) who wants help finding the rest of his species.

It’s a shame that Missing Link didn’t do better in theatres when it was released earlier this year, because the success of films like this is what ensures that studios like Laika are able to make more of these sorts of films. This is a delightful work, and now that it’s available on Blu-ray, I hope more people will seek it out. For more on the film itself, you can read my full review right here.

The Blu-ray also includes a selection of mostly short featurettes that give us a glimpse into the painstaking process of animating the film, which was a bit of a hybrid between stop motion and digital effects. First up is a piece entitled Animation Inspiration, which is viewable with or without commentary by director Chris Butler, and shows clips from the finished film alongside picture-in-picture concept art and footage from various stages of development.

This is followed by the six featurettes Creating Mr. Link; Oh What a Mystery: Pulling the Camera Back on Missing Link’s Magic; Making Faces; Bringing the Final Battle on the Ice Bridge to Life; Inside the Magic of Laika; and VFX Breakdown Reel – Realizing the Potential of Stop Motion. While some of these are quite short, it’s always a treat getting to witness how a film like this has been brought to the screen using puppets on miniature sets, and seeing even brief glimpses behind the scenes gives us an even deeper appreciation of the finished work.

Missing Link is an Elevation Pictures release. It’s 94 minutes and rated PG.
