By John Corrado

This week, Paramount is releasing a new Blu-ray set that includes both Avatar: The Last Airbender and the followup series The Legend of Korra, bringing together two of the most popular and widely acclaimed animated shows of this generation in one gigantic collection.

Running for three seasons between 2005 and 2008 on Nickelodeon, Avatar: The Last Airbender tells the story of Aang (Zach Tyler), the Avatar of an ancient airbender who is discovered frozen in an iceberg by waterbender Katara (Mae Whitman) and her older brother Sokka (Jack De Sena).

Aang has the ability to control all four elements (water, earth, fire and air), making him instrumental in helping the other elemental nations fight the long-raging war against the Fire Nation. It was followed by the sequel series The Legend of Korra, which ran for four seasons from 2012 to 2014, and focuses on the new Avatar, Korra (Janet Varney), as she seeks the master the ancient art of airbending and protect the retrofuturistic metropolis of Republic City.

The two series were created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, and draw upon Asian influences both in their themes and storytelling, with a look that is heavily inspired by Japanese anime, including the work of Hayao Miyazaki. The visuals are beautifully drawn throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, and both shows feature engaging characters and tell stories that are rich with their own well-established mythology. For fans who have yet to purchase either one of these series individually on Blu-ray, this attractively packaged box set is highly recommended.

The 17-disc Blu-ray set also comes with a variety of bonus features, including “making of” featurettes, behind the scenes footage, commentary tracks, storyboards and uncut animatics, which seem to be the same extras that were featured on the individual releases. Both series are housed in their own plastic cases, which are kept together in an outer cardboard box. A double-sided comic book is also included with the set. Both series are presented in their original 4:3 aspect ratios.

Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra – The Complete Blu-ray Collection is a Paramount Home Media Distribution release. It’s approximately 2672 minutes and rated PG.
