Blu-ray Review: Sonic the Hedgehog

May 19, 2020

By John Corrado

By virtue of being one of the few big movies this year to get a theatrical release in February before COVID-19 forced most theatres to shut down in March, Sonic the Hedgehog carries the distinction of being one of the highest grossing movies of 2020. After receiving an early digital release two months ago, the film is being released on Blu-ray this week.

In my review of the film, which you can read right here, I concluded by saying Sonic the Hedgehog “is an amusing, slightly better than expected video game adaptation that makes good use of its title character, providing decent entertainment for families and fans.” In short, it’s a fun movie to watch at home.

The Blu-ray comes with a variety of bonus features, starting with a commentary track featuring director Jeff Fowler and actor Ben Schwartz, who voices Sonic in the film. This is followed by Around the World in 80 Seconds, a brief 2D animated short done in a very crude, cartoony style showing Sonic travelling the globe.

Next we get five deleted scenes (Original Opening, Super Observant Carl, Baby Sonic, Tom and Sonic Have a Chat, Rachel and Wade Plan a Date) with an introduction by Fowler, which feature incomplete visual effects and showcase the discarded original design for Sonic. These are followed by a two minute blooper reel, and a music video for the end credits song “Speed Me Up” featuring Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Yachty and Sueco the Child.

Finally, the disc includes the four featurettes For the Love of Sonic, Building Robotinik With Jim Carrey, The Blue Blur: Origins of Sonic, and Sonic On Set. Together they offer a decent look at the legacy of the video game character, the making of the film, and why those involved were drawn towards the project, but leave out the infamous production troubles and redesign of the title character after the film was already completed due to fan pushback from the trailer. The set is packaged with an embossed slipcover that also holds a limited edition comic book titled The Adventures of Sonic & Donut Lord.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a Paramount Home Media Distribution release. It’s 98 minutes and rated PG.
