Blu-ray Review: Mission: Impossible: The Original TV Series

November 30, 2020

By John Corrado

Before it became a blockbuster film franchise starring Tom Cruise, Mission: Impossible was an Emmy-winning TV series that ran on CBS for seven seasons from 1966 to 1973. Now Paramount is releasing the entire series for the first time ever on Blu-ray this week, in a mammoth box set that includes all 171 episodes of the original series spread across 46 discs.

Created by Bruce Geller, and produced by Desilu Productions, Mission: Impossible is notable for having high production values across its fifty minute episodes, which all begin with the iconic “self destructing” message. The Cold War-era show follows members of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF), led by Dan Briggs (Steven Hill) in the first season and Jim Phelps (Peter Graves) in the other six, as they embark on dangerous assignments to thwart high level attacks and take down crooked dictators.

The other members of the IMF include master of disguise Rollin Hand (Martin Landau), tech wizard Barney Collier (Greg Morris), strong man Willy Armitage (Peter Lupus), and female operative Cinnamon Carter (Barbara Bain), who uses her unique gifts to, shall we see, distract male enemies. Leonard Nimoy, Sam Elliot and Lesley Ann Warren also appear as members of the team.

The first thing you will notice about this set when picking it up is the heft that it has to it. A tray slides out the side of the box that holds all seven seasons, which are individually packed in fold out cardboard cases that resemble the mission files seen on the show and are nicely decorated with images and quotes. While I do wish that the outer cardboard box was a bit sturdier, the packaging is quite cool, and the set would make a nice centrepiece item on your shelf.

From the classic theme music composed by Lalo Schifrin, to the suspenseful situations and elaborate disguises, all of which have become staples of the film franchise as well, Mission: Impossible is a classic, high quality series that is fun to revisit. With Christmas coming up, this set would make a great gift.

Bonus Features (Blu-ray):

The 46-disc set includes no additional bonus features.

Mission: Impossible: The Original TV Series is a Paramount Home Entertainment release. It’s approximately 143 hours and 45 minutes. Seasons 1-6 are rated PG and Season 7 is 14A.
